Effective April 1, 2019, OHIP+ will no longer provide drug coverage for individuals under the age of 25 who have access to private insurance. Critical Illness Waiver of Premium & Conversion

Waiver of Premium

If you are totally disabled while the plan is in force and you provide satisfactory evidence of total disability to AIG Insurance Company of Canada on an annual basis, we will then waive the payment of premium. Subject to all the terms and conditions of the policy, waiver of any premium will continue with respect to your insurance, until you attain age 65. If you cease to be totally disabled and you return to active employment with the policyholder, and are a member of an eligible class, the insurance may be continued upon resumption of premium payments.

Total Disability: means disability resulting from injury or sickness which:

  1. prevents engagement in your regular occupation during the first 24 months and thereafter, any gainful employment for which you are reasonably qualified for because of education, training or experience; and
  2. has existed continuously for a period of at least 12 months or is in accordance with the waiver of premium requirements under the Trust Fund’s Long Term Disability policy. 

Conversion

On the date of termination of employment or during the 31-day period following termination of employment, you may convert your insurance to an individual insurance policy of AIG Insurance Company of Canada. The individual policy will be effective either as of the date that AIG Insurance Company of Canada receives the application or on the date that coverage under the group policy ceases, whichever occurs later. The premium will be the same as a person would ordinarily pay when applying for an individual policy at that time.  Application for an individual policy may be made at any office of AIG Insurance Company of Canada.  The amount of insurance benefit converted to shall not exceed that amount issued during employment up to an all policies combined maximum of $25,000. The individual policy will be limited to four critical illnesses: Cancer, Stroke, Heart Attack and Kidney Failure.
