Effective April 1, 2019, OHIP+ will no longer provide drug coverage for individuals under the age of 25 who have access to private insurance. Therefore, prescription drug claims for children and youth 24 years of age and younger with private plan coverage will have to be submitted directly to their private plan. Click here for details!

Critical Illness

The Critical Illness Benefit provides financial assistance in the event you are diagnosed with one of the covered illnesses.   The benefit was designed to alleviate some of the financial stress resulting from a critical illness at a time when the focus should be on recovery. There is no restriction on the use of the benefit; you can use it in anyway that will meet your particular needs.

This benefit is available only to Active Members or Early Retirees, but does not apply to Members over age 65.

 Benefit Amount

You are covered for a flat amount of $30,000. Coverage ceases upon the earlier of termination, retirement or the attainment of age 65.

Payment Terms

If, while coverage is in effect:

  1. if you are, for the first time in your lifetime, diagnosed with Cancer and survive for a period of thirty days thereafter, AIG Insurance Company of Canada will pay the Benefit Amount; or
  2. if you, for the first time in your lifetime, suffer a  Benign Brain Tumour, Heart Attack, Stroke, Major Organ Failure, Multiple Sclerosis, Paralysis, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Alzheimer’s Disease, Coma, Deafness, Parkinson’s Disease, Severe Burns or becomes Blind, and survive for a period of thirty days thereafter (one hundred and eighty days for Paralysis), AIG Insurance Company of Canada will pay the Benefit Amount; or
  3. if you, for the first time in their lifetime, undergo Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery or Aorta Surgery, and survive for a period of thirty days thereafter, AIG Insurance Company of Canada will pay the Benefit Amount.


The benefit amount will only be paid once even though you may be diagnosed with, suffer or undergo more than one of the specified illnesses.
